Salt Lake 2002 is the official video game of the XIX Olympic Winter Games, developed by Attention to Detail and published by Eidos Interactive. Released in early 2002 for the PlayStation 2, the title utilizes advanced technical assets for its time, including satellite imaging technology to recreate terrain accurate to two feet in height and motion-capture data for realistic athlete animations. The game captures the atmosphere of the Salt Lake City games through a TV-style presentation, complete with authentic commentary and officially licensed Olympic venues.
The title features six core Olympic events: Men's Alpine Skiing Downhill, Ladies' Alpine Skiing Slalom, Men's Two-Man Bobsleigh, Women's Freestyle Skiing Aerials, Men's Ski Jumping K120 Individual, and Men's Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom. Players can compete in four distinct modes, including the comprehensive Olympic Mode, which tracks medals and trophies in a virtual trophy room, and Tournament Mode for progressive competition. For social play, the game supports multiplayer action for up to four players, allowing for head-to-head split-screen races in events like snowboarding and skiing.
