Darksiders II is an expansive action-RPG developed by Vigil Games and published by THQ in 2012. Set parallel to the events of the first game, the story follows Death, the most feared of the Four Horsemen, on a personal quest to clear his brother War’s name and resurrect humanity. This sequel technically shifts the series' DNA from a Zelda-like action-adventure toward a massive, loot-driven open-world RPG, featuring four distinct realms to explore: the Forge Lands, the Kingdom of the Dead, Lostlight, and Shadow's Edge.
The gameplay is technically distinguished by its fast-paced, acrobatic combat and deep customization. Death utilizes his signature Dual Scythes for primary attacks, but the core of the experience lies in the randomized loot system, which provides thousands of weapons and armor pieces with varying stats and elemental effects. Players can develop Death through two distinct skill trees: the Harbinger (melee focus) and the Necromancer (summoning and magic focus). Traversal is enhanced by Despair, Death's phantom horse, and Dust, his crow companion who guides the player toward objectives, alongside advanced wall-running and platforming mechanics.
Technically, Darksiders II on the PlayStation 3 targets a native 720p resolution at 30 frames per second. The game is powered by a proprietary engine that emphasizes the distinct, stylized art of comic book legend Joe Madureira, featuring high-contrast colors and exaggerated character silhouettes. The audio experience is anchored by an atmospheric, folk-inspired orchestral score by Jesper Kyd. While the game is primarily single-player, it features an online "Tome" system, allowing players to mail weapons and items to their friends' games, as well as "The Crucible," an arena-based horde mode that tests the limits of the player's custom build.
