Description

NieR (often referred to as NieR Gestalt to distinguish it from its Japanese-exclusive counterpart) is a genre-defying action-RPG developed by cavia and published by Square Enix in April 2010. Set in a decaying post-apocalyptic world 1,312 years after a cataclysmic event in Tokyo, the narrative follows a grizzled middle-aged protagonist—known to fans as "Father Nier"—as he searches for a cure for his daughter Yonah, who is afflicted by the terminal "Black Scrawl" virus. The game is a cult classic known for its melancholic atmosphere, complex philosophical themes, and its status as a spin-off of the "Ending E" path from the original Drakengard.

The gameplay is technically ambitious, frequently shifting genres from third-person hack-and-slash to 2D platforming, top-down "bullet hell" shooters, and even text-based adventure segments. Players are accompanied by Grimoire Weiss, a sentient, arrogant magical book that grants access to "Sealed Verses"—powerful spells that can be customized with "Words" dropped by enemies to alter damage, MP cost, or status effects. Combat involves a mix of three weapon classes (one-handed swords, two-handed swords, and spears) and magical projectiles. To experience the full story, the game utilizes a unique multigenerational New Game Plus system; players must complete the game at least four times to witness all possible endings (A through D), with subsequent playthroughs revealing new dialogue and context that radically change the player's perspective on the antagonists.

Technically, NieR on the PlayStation 3 runs at a native 720p resolution and targets 30 frames per second. While criticized at launch for its "dated" visual fidelity and simple environment textures, the title is lauded for its technical sound design, featuring an award-winning acoustic and vocal soundtrack composed by Keiichi Okabe and the MONACA team. The game is a strictly single-player experience with no online multiplayer components. One notable technical quirk of the original PS3 release is that it features "Father Nier" in the West, whereas the Japanese PS3 version (NieR Replicant) featured a teenage "Brother Nier"—a difference that was not reconciled globally until the 2021 remaster.
