Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom is a third-person action role-playing game developed and published by Sony Online Entertainment as a launch title for the PlayStation 3 in November 2006. Moving the series from handheld to high-definition, the narrative centers on an elite unit of knights known as the Dragon’s Shade who return to their homeland of Dureth only to discover their king, Halaskar, has been corrupted by dark magic and is transforming his citizens into monstrous beasts. Players must navigate a linear campaign across diverse environments to dismantle the king's influence and restore peace to the realm.
The gameplay features a traditional hack-and-slash core with three distinct playable classes: Golan Kor (the powerful Warrior), Malakesh (the master Mage), and Zala (the agile Scout). Unlike previous entries, players are restricted to a single primary weapon type per character for the duration of the game, but can deeply customize their performance through an enhancement slot system using orbs that add elemental damage, health regeneration, or utility effects. Combat is built around a dynamic combo system that allows players to string together light and heavy attacks to trigger specialized finishing moves, while a persistent leveling system grants points to upgrade unique skills and passive attributes like Spell Defense and Attack Power.
Technically, Dark Kingdom was designed as an early showcase for the PS3, rendering environments at a native 720p resolution with physics powered by the Havok engine to allow for environmental destruction and realistic character death animations. The game supports drop-in/drop-out cooperative play, allowing two players to quest together locally or up to four players to team up via online multiplayer sessions. While praised for its crisp visuals and orchestral score, the title is technically noted for its fixed-perspective camera in co-op mode and occasionally long loading times between its expansive levels.
