Valkyria Chronicles is a critically acclaimed tactical role-playing game developed by Sega WOW and published by SEGA for the PlayStation 3 in 2008. Set in a fictional 1930s Europe (Europa), the narrative follows a small neutral nation called Gallia as it is pulled into a continent-wide war between the Atlantic Federation and the East Europan Imperial Alliance. The game is technically renowned for its proprietary CANVAS graphics engine, which renders the entire experience with a unique, hand-drawn aesthetic that resembles a watercolor painting in motion.
The gameplay is defined by the innovative BLiTZ (Battle of Live Tactical Zones) system, which seamlessly blends traditional turn-based strategy with third-person action. Players begin in Command Mode, utilizing an overhead map to spend "Command Points" (CP) to select units. Selecting a unit transitions the game into Action Mode, where the player controls that character in real-time from a third-person perspective, limited only by an Action Point (AP) gauge. The squad consists of over 100 customizable characters divided into five core classes: Scouts, Shocktroopers, Lancers, Engineers, and Snipers, alongside the powerful Edelweiss tank commanded by protagonist Welkin Gunther.
Technically, the original PlayStation 3 version targets a native 720p resolution at 30 frames per second. The game supports Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and features a complete orchestral score by Hitoshi Sakimoto. While the title is strictly a single-player experience, it offers deep replayability through a "New Game Plus" mode and a "Book Mode" that allows players to revisit and play through individual chapters and side-stories known as "Reports". It also includes dual-audio support, allowing players to choose between the original Japanese or English voice casts.
