Set after a mysterious parasitic organism known as the Archæans begins infecting cities around the world, the game places players in the role of elite Rainbow operators tasked with containing and eradicating this rapidly evolving menace. The tone shifts from counter-terrorism to sci-fi survival while retaining the methodical pacing the series is known for.
Players form three-person squads and choose from a roster of familiar operators, each equipped with unique gadgets, weapons, and abilities adapted for PvE missions. Objectives vary from rescuing hostages and collecting samples to eliminating powerful enemies, all within contained zones that emphasize planning, stealth, and teamwork. Enemy types are highly reactive, punishing reckless behavior and rewarding careful coordination, sound management, and tactical execution. Every mission carries risk, as injured or captured operators must be rescued in future runs.
