In Band Hero, Activision spun the Guitar Hero formula into a family-friendly pop-rock celebration. Released in 2009, it trades the series' traditional heavy metal grit for a vibrant, neon-soaked stage featuring over 65 Top-40 hits from artists like Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, and No Doubt. The game is built on the Guitar Hero 5 engine, meaning it includes the highly accessible "Party Play" mode, where players can jump in or out of a song at any time, change instruments on the fly, or even play with four of the same instrument (like an all-vocal quartet).
The Wii version is uniquely famous for its extensive Wii-DS Connectivity. If you have a Nintendo DS, you can link it to the Wii to access DS Party Play, allowing a fifth person to act as a digital "DJ" who manages the setlist and queues up songs without pausing the game. Even more chaotic is Roadie Battle, a competitive mode where DS players "sabotage" their friends on the Wii by playing touch-screen mini-games to break strings, blow out speakers, or mess with the soundboard in real-time.
