Description
In Mortal Kombat: Deception, Midway expanded the "3D Era" of the franchise with a content-heavy package that famously offered more than just fighting. Set immediately after the events of Deadly Alliance, the story follows the resurrection of the Dragon King, Onaga, who threatens to consume the realms. While the core gameplay retains the three-style fighting system (two hand-to-hand and one weapon style per character), Deception is defined by its massive Konquest Mode—an open-world RPG adventure where you play as Shujinko, traveling through the realms and training under legendary masters over several decades.
Beyond the main roster of 24 fighters, the game introduced high-stakes environmental hazards known as Death Traps, allowing players to win a round instantly by knocking an opponent into spikes, grinders, or off skyscrapers. It also introduced Hara-Kiri, a "self-fatality" that allows the losing player to kill themselves before the winner can perform a Fatality. For a change of pace, the game features two addictive mini-games: Puzzle Kombat (a Tetris-style battler) and Chess Kombat (a tactical board game where pieces fight in real-time).
