The story follows X, Zero, and Axl as they uncover the dark secrets behind the Jakob Project, a plan to colonize the Moon with next-generation Reploids. When Sigma inevitably returns to threaten the world, the Maverick Hunters must face challenging new enemies and powerful bosses across diverse and imaginative stages.
Each of the three playable characters offers distinct abilities—X with his charged buster shots, Zero with his devastating melee saber techniques, and Axl with dual pistols and his copy ability that lets him transform into certain foes. The game also introduces new mechanics like Guard Breaks and Double Attacks, which encourage strategic combat. Ride Armor suits return, giving players extra firepower in certain levels.
