Often referred to as Mortal Kombat 9, this 2011 title serves as a brutal "soft reboot" of the franchise, returning the series to its bloody 2D fighting roots after years of 3D experimentation. The story begins at the end of Armageddon, with a defeated Raiden sending a desperate psychic message to his past self: "He must win!". This allows players to relive a reimagined version of the first three games’ storylines, where familiar events take dark, unexpected turns.
The gameplay introduced the high-impact X-Ray moves, devastating cinematic attacks triggered by a full three-tier super meter that show internal bones shattering in graphic detail. Beyond the cinematic story mode, the game is packed with content including the Challenge Tower, a 300-mission gauntlet of bizarre scenarios (like fighting without arms or during an earthquake), and the return of classic mini-games like "Test Your Might". As of March 2026, the digital version remains delisted on all storefronts due to licensing issues with guest character Freddy Krueger, making physical copies highly sought after for play on modern consoles.
