Description

Rayman 3D is a 3D platformer developed by Ubisoft Casablanca and released as a launch title for the Nintendo 3DS in March 2011. Technically, the game is a direct port of Rayman 2: The Great Escape, specifically the Dreamcast version, which is widely considered the visually superior edition of the original 1999 title. The narrative remains faithful to the source: the limbless hero Rayman must escape the Robo-Pirate prison ship and traverse the Glade of Dreams to collect 1,000 Yellow Lums and four ancient masks to summon the god Polokus.

The gameplay leverages the 3DS hardware by mapping character movement to the Circle Pad, offering far more fluid 360-degree control than the previous Nintendo DS edition. While the core platforming—jumping, swimming, and hovering with Rayman’s "helicopter" hair—remains identical to the original, this version features a revised learning curve and optimized camera angles designed to make the 3D space more accessible. Players explore 45 distinct areas across 13 regions, utilizing unique abilities like firing energy shots or riding physics-based objects like powder kegs and plum-like fruits to navigate puzzles. Notably, the bottom touchscreen is used purely for the HUD (health and Lum count), removing the "twiddly" touch controls from the 2005 DS version in favor of a clean, button-focused experience.

Technically, Rayman 3D is defined by its use of the stereoscopic 3D display, which adds significant depth to the game's wide-open environments and makes juzging distances for platforming jumps easier. The game targets 60 frames per second, though it is notorious for performance fluctuations that can see the framerate dip to 30fps or lower during intense combat or complex particle effects. Unlike the Dreamcast original, this port removes the Globox Village and various minigames to fit the handheld format, and it lacks support for modern 3DS features like StreetPass or Gyro controls. Note for 2026: While playable on standard hardware, users with a New Nintendo 3DS may find the experience more stable, as the extra CPU power can help mitigate some of the original port's performance chugs.
