Tales of Xillia is a landmark Japanese role-playing game developed by Namco Tales Studio and published by Bandai Namco Games for the PlayStation 3. Released as the series' 15th-anniversary title, it features a unique dual-protagonist system where players choose to follow the story of either Jude Mathis, a clever medical student, or Milla Maxwell, a mysterious woman who claims to be the Lord of Spirits. This choice affects which cutscenes and exclusive plot points the player sees, encouraging at least two full playthroughs to grasp the entire narrative of the world of Rieze Maxia.

The combat utilizes the Double Raid Linear Motion Battle System (DR-LMBS), which is technically distinguished by its "Linking" mechanic. Players can tether their character to an AI ally, granting shared passive skills and the ability to execute Linked Artes—devastating team-up attacks that vary based on the pairing. Character progression is handled via the Lilium Orb, a web-like grid where players spend Growth Points (GP) to manually map out stat boosts and unlock new skills in a non-linear fashion. Unlike previous entries, Xillia replaces the traditional world map with interconnected, free-roaming 3D environments and a dedicated fast-travel map.

Technically, the PlayStation 3 original runs at a native 720p resolution. The performance is split between exploration and combat: the world and cutscenes typically run at 30 frames per second, while the battle sequences target a fluid 60fps to maintain the "fighting game" responsiveness the series is known for. The game features a sweeping score by Motoi Sakuraba and an iconic opening animation by ufotable, set to the track "Progress" by Ayumi Hamasaki. While the PS3 version does not support online play, it maintains the series' tradition of local 4-player co-op during combat encounters.
