Tetris Worlds is a reimagined version of the classic puzzle franchise developed by Blue Planet Software and published by THQ for the PlayStation 2. Released in 2002 for the platform, the title introduced several modernized technical standards that eventually became the "Tetris Guideline," including a longer lock delay, a hard-drop mechanic, and the Super Rotation System (SRS). The game's narrative follows "Minos," cuboid creatures who must evacuate their homeworld and colonize six different planets by completing specialized puzzle challenges before their sun goes supernova.
The title is technically distinct for its six unique gameplay variations, each tied to a specific 3D-animated world with evolving backgrounds. Beyond Classic Tetris, modes include Cascade (clearing lines triggers gravity-based falling), Sticky (colored blocks fuse together), Fusion (connecting "Atom Blocks" to a central core), Hot-Line (points are only earned on specific highlighted rows), and Square (bonus points for forming 4x4 squares). The PlayStation 2 version supports local four-player split-screen multiplayer, where clearing multiple lines simultaneously sends "garbage" to opponents' screens to disrupt their progress.
